Adoption of Handicapped
Children
When most people are looking to adopt a child,
they are probably thinking of adopting a baby because they can't
have one of their own. They might be thinking of what kind of baby
they'd like to adopt, but most likely they are simply thinking that
since they can't have a baby, they want to adopt one.
Some people decide that they want to adopt older
children, which is a wonderful thing because there are many older
children who are in need of loving homes. However, there are also
children with disabilities who are in need of loving homes as well,
who don't get adopted very often.
Many times,
children with disabilities end up being abandoned by their
biological parents. If their parents are young and don't know how
to handle children who are sick or who have disabilities, they
might feel that they can no longer care for the child. They might
be overwhelmed or feel like the child isn't going to have a good
home with them. They might also be scared about raising a child
with disabilities. Sadly, many parents who have children with
disabilities sometimes give them up for adoption.
It is also a sad fact that some parents of
children with disabilities have these children taken away from them
because they don't care for them properly. It might be a matter of
not knowing how to care for a child with disabilities, or not
wanting to, but sometimes children with disabilities are severely
neglected and are taken way from their parents. Sometimes the
parental rights are terminated by the courts, and sometimes they
are terminated by the parents.
Whatever the reason, there are many children
with disabilities who are waiting to be adopted. Sometimes these
are children who have special physical needs that you might be able
to fulfill for them, and sometimes these are children with mental
needs that you might have to do work with. Whatever the disability,
the fact remains that some children never get the chance to be in a
loving family because they are disabled. If you have the room in
your heart and in your life, adopting a child with special needs is
something that you should consider doing. It is something that is
going to create the best environment for that child, and something
that is going to make your life so much better. Consider doing this
if you absolutely can. It might be the best thing you ever do.
