Child Adoption

Here or There: Benefits and Disadvantages of Inter-country Adoption

If you are considering adopting a child, one of the things that you might be looking at is adopting a child who lives in your own country already. This is an adoption that takes place inside the country in which you live.

There are several things that you should know about this. First of all, many times adoption agencies in your home country are going to be working very hard to place children in homes where they will fit well. This might mean that they are even looking for children with like hair and eye colors to be placed in homes where they will match better. This might be an archaic practice, but it does occur because some adoption agencies feel that children do better if they resemble their families. If you are adopting in your own country and you agree with this, you should look for an adoption center that feels the same way.

However, if the physical aspects of your adoptive children don't matter, you will have better luck searching for an adoption agency that will place children with the best homes, even if they might look different from their families. For these agencies, you might have a better chance of getting a baby sooner.

You should also know that there might be less red tape when it comes to adopting from your own country. There may be more paperwork to fill out if you are adopting within the United States, but often this paperwork is easier to fill out than the few that you will have to fill out if you are adopting children from another country. Also, you won't have to travel somewhere else to get your children, and you won't have to stay in another country for any amount of time if you adopt a child from your own country.

However, if you adopt a child in your own country, the chances of having an open adoption are going to be much higher. You might have to make sacrifices and allow the birth parents to have a role in their child's life, even after you have fully adopted their child when you adopt in your home country.

There are many factors that you should consider before you decide whether you want to adopt in your own country or in another country. No matter what you decide though it is important to remember that you will be welcoming a person into your family forever, and that is, in the end, what really matters.
