Open Adoptions
One of the ways that you might become a parent
is through adopting. If you have tried to be a parent and for
whatever reason you are unable to have children of your own, you
might want to consider for a moment the possibilities for
parenthood that lie in adopting. If you adopt a child, you are
going to have that child for life, in the same way that you are
going to have your own biological child. A child that you adopt is
your child, no matter what.
There are several
different types of adoptions, and one of them is called an open
adoption. In many states, it was getting harder and harder to find
parents who were willing to give their children up for adopting
because it was very hard for those parents to ever have contact
with those children again. Because they didn't want to give their
children up and never see them again, many people would keep
children instead of giving them up for adoption, even if they
didn't want to have children or can't provide a good home. When a
person kept a child even though they didn't want to have children,
there was going to be a higher percentage of neglect and abuse
happening. This happens when mothers feel that they must either
keep a child they don't really want, or give that child up forever
without being able to see it again.
In order to help mothers who didn't ever want
children, but also didn't want to give up a child forever, some
states created open adoptions. This means that the biological
mother has a chance to help pick out the people who will raise her
child. It also means that this mother is going to be able to
develop a plan with the new parents and with the courts to make
sure that she will have some contact with her child during that
child's life. Usually this is a simple as a court order that states
that the biological mother is going to be able to receive letters
and updates about the child. Sometimes, however, and more and more
commonly, adoptive families are embracing birth parents as part of
their lives, making sure that their children have a relationship
with their biological parent, even if that parent doesn't live with
them. This ends up being a great way for mothers to feel
comfortable about giving up their child for adoption, and it ends
up being great for the child, who has the love of many parents
throughout their lives.
